“Is the Breville 800JEXL able to juice leafy greens & wheatgrass?” must be one of the most common questions that we receive daily through our support channel.
Would a like a short answer? Ok; here it goes:
Yes, the Breville 800JEXL can juice leafy greens and wheat grass; but it is simply not the best option for that.
Now, you will find many places which will say that a Breville 800JEXL cannot juice wheatgrass & leafy greens. This is much open to debate and the fact is that a Breville Juice Fountain Elite can indeed juice leafy greens and wheat grass; but it won’t juice as good as some of the masticating juicers mentioned below.
This is the same answer we have given when we were asked if juicers are able to handle frozen fruits and vegetables: masticating juicers will usually work better with them; even cheap masticating juicers.
If your main priority is indeed extracting juice from wheat grass, leafy greens and similar ones in order to get all the benefits from salad greens*, then we recommend getting a good masticating juicer like an Omega 8006 juicer or maybe an excellent vertical masticating juicer like an Omega VRT350HD. A Green Star GS-1000 might also be another good option. All these masticating and triturating juicers will be able to extract juice way more efficiently than a 800JEXL would ever be able to. You may check some different options that you might have available at our Best Juicers to Buy guide.
Additionally, we have made contact with Breville to find out more about whether the Breville Juice Fountain Elite 800JEXL is or is not able to juice wheatgrass and leafy greens. Here’s their answer:
“Great question. We get this one a lot.
You can juice leafy greens in your Breville Juicer. The juicers with the lower speeds will work the best. We recommend wrapping and compacting as much as possible, the wheat grass in a lettuce leaf to provide more of a solid structure to extract from. It is much like a cheese grater. It is much easier to grate a block of cheese than a slice of cheese because of the flimsiness. Furthermore, our juicers are essentially made to extract juice from juicy fruits and vegetables, and while they may be able to extract some juice from wheat grass, the optimal type of juicer for this type of substance is a masticating juicer.”
Now, we have mentioned above that even though you can use a Breville 800JEXL to juice wheatgrass and leafy green, we believe that even cheap masticating juicers will perform a better job for that particular purpose. For all other fruits and vegetables (like blackberries) then yes, a Breville 800JEXL is our top recommendation.
You just need to compare their speed in order to find out why: while a Breville 800JEXL will spin the pulp at around 6.500 – 13.000 RPM, masticating juicers will usually spin at around 80 RPM. Hence, masticating and triturating juicers are better options if you would like to be able to fully extract juice from leafy greens & wheatgrass.
Now, if you believe that you will only juice wheatgrass and leafy greens every now and then, then you might be able to get away by using the lower speed of your Breville 800Jexl Juice Fountain Elite for occasional juices.
